I really enjoyed painting “Happy New Year” so I decided to do another one with a similar concept. Thinking of subjects for these trompe l’oeils is just as much fun as painting them and trying to make them look realistic.

Here’s a new trompe l’oeil painting. For those who find this post a bit late with almost 2 weeks past now since New Year’s Day, I’ll explain. I started creating a painting a day on June 20, 2009, but I only managed to get this blog going on July 4, 2009. Although it means that I am always ahead by about 15 paintings, each one is posted to this blog in the order that I painted them. I didn’t plan the date before painting this trompe l’oeil and its turn only came up today.
Looking back, I am thankful that I have been able to finish one painting a day, except for one day when I painted two (red pepper and green pepper) and another day when I worked on a portrait instead of a daily painting.

This one was painted from a picture I took a while back. It’s my first time to paint these round eggplants but I am very pleased with how it turned out. Although I much prefer the taste of the longer, violet eggplants, I must say that these round ones are just as much fun to paint.

Potatoes are so much fun to paint! I am very pleased with how this turned out, but there is a lot of glare showing in the scan, especially in the peeler’s handle area. In reality, it is quite smooth and even. I’ll try to get a better scan of this later if I can and change the image.

Here’s something a little new today. With the help of my brother, David, I made a video as I was painting this. This is my very first video demonstration. I wasn’t able to post anything yesterday because I was trying to figure out how to do this properly.
In the movie, you will see the progress of this painting — from blank board to the final stage. I filmed most of the painting process, but I wasn’t able to include the last few minutes because I ran out of tape! Anyway, I sped this up quite a bit to make it fit the 10-minute limit for YouTube videos.
I hope to do more demonstrations like this in the future. Comments and suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Please let me know what you like about it (and what you don’t like!) so that I can improve future videos. Enjoy!

I have done two paintings of grapes before. Although I love eating grapes, painting them was a different story. Getting the bloom on the grapes to look right was difficult and I also had trouble keeping the paint smooth. Anyway, I tried it once again and this was the result. I am quite pleased with it. It was great fun to do…I can’t imagine why I didn’t paint grapes more often!

Well, here’s my 100th daily painting! I wanted to paint something special so this is bigger than the ACEOs I have been posting lately. I also searched quite a bit for that special subject and/or composition. At first, I thought I’d do another avocado like the first daily painting, but since I couldn’t get any avocados, I settled on oranges. I chose this composition because I think it represents “100″ perfectly without being too obvious.
I’m dedicating this painting to my Mom, who encouraged me to do the daily paintings in the first place, and who’s been very supportive.
It’s been a good 100 days and I’ve learned so much about oil painting. I’ve been able to paint ordinary things which I never thought would have potential in a painting before. It’s truly a wonderful experience to slow down and examine details and all the beautiful things that God has created for us. Everything is beautiful!
There is still so much to learn, and my plan is to keep this up for at least a year. But we’ll see where it goes. One thing’s for sure though — I’m looking forward to the next 100! I hope you are too!
Thank you to friends and subscribers who left comments and gave their support! Also, many thanks to other daily painters, especially to Michael Naples and Painting-a-Day pioneer Duane Keiser, for the inspiration.

This is a cute cabbage measuring only about 10 centimeters or 4 inches long. The one in my painting, I mean, not my real subject.
I was having problems with the background at first. Initially, it looked like the wood block was floating, so I scraped off the top part of the background to try and correct it. I thought it looked more interesting that way so I just left the top part “unfinished”. Hope you like it!

Another painting of one of my most favorite vegetables. It’s funny, but the two eggplant dishes that I love to eat most have eggs as one of the ingredients. I think they go very well in a dish together. I’m not sure if those two dishes are what they had in mind when they called this vegetable “eggplant”, but I think the name is perfect for it!
The very first eggplant painting I did was posted about two weeks ago. It was great fun to paint, so I decided to do another one. I liked this eggplant’s curved shape and chose a light background to feature it.

I’m posting two oil paintings today, both featuring lychee leaves. In the painting above, I tried a new background design. I used a stiff bristle brush and fairly thick white paint in order to achieve the “sketchy” edges. I am happy with the result, but I’m thinking that this may be more interesting if the board had some burnt sienna tint instead of just the white gesso.

This was done almost two months ago. It is the smallest painting I have posted so far. It’s not part of the daily painting series although it was done in one sitting as well. I initially wanted to do a study of water drops, but I couldn’t decide where to put them until I saw this leaf.

I really hated this while I was working on it. I had no idea how I would approach the layers of wrinkled paper, and getting the color of the pear right was a struggle as well because it almost always turned out too gray. Funny how after staring at the finished painting for a few hours it has become one of my most favorite. I like the contrast of the texture and thick paint of the paper against the smoothness of the pear.

I wasn’t sure if these were limes or just green, unripe lemons. I researched on the internet and found that limes are much denser and would sink in a bowl of water. These floated so I guess they’re green lemons.

My Mom thought these two bell peppers would make good painting subjects, especially how one was turning yellow/orange at the top. My favorite is the green one that’s resting on its side though. It’s amazing how even a faint reflected light can make a painted subject look more realistic.

I didn’t get a chance to post this earlier today. For this painting, I wanted to do a study of an orange flesh. I have done a few oranges before, but making the flesh look realistic and juicy was the most difficult to pull off. The background was inspired by yesterday’s eggplant painting.

I wanted to move away from fruits and vegetables for a while so I did this needle, thread and button painting.
I think I am slowly able to tolerate some brushstrokes showing. It used to be that I’d completely blend away all traces of the brush because if any was showing, it just didn’t feel “finished”.
I love tightly rendered paintings, but I also love those which are brushy. There is a battle within me as I haven’t decided which style to pursue yet. Hopefully, as I continue this painting-a-day journey, I’ll be able to determine which style I am most happy with.
