Catching up on a few things that happened during the last three weeks…

A week or so ago, Judy Felker featured some of my work on her blog Creative Wonder. Stop by for a visit and check out the other artists she’s featured. I’ve “discovered” a number of new favorites myself.

Also about a week ago, Michel Oosterhout invited me to submit my Apple Half painting below to his An Apple a Day project. Check it out!

Apple Half Painting - Realistic

And about two weeks or so ago, I received in the mail this beautiful pencil drawing from one of the sweetest and kindest persons I know. Sherry is a fabulous artist and I hope you will take time to visit her blog. Lately, she has also begun posting photos of her drawings in progress so you can see how she creates her realistic, and often very intricate, drawings.

Tangerine Wedge Oil Painting - 1 Tangerine Wedge Daily Painting - 2

Daily Paintings #260 and #261 – Tangerine Wedge No. 1 and No. 2

Oil painting on gessoed matboard
Approximately 6 x 6 inches — 15 x 15 cm

Here are two more of my most favorite daily paintings from the past. I couldn’t help making the first of these tangerine wedges a companion piece because I loved the background color so much.

Doing the “dailies” gave me opportunity to paint subjects I would never have tried otherwise. Some were easy, some a lot of fun and some were challenging. One that I would categorize in all three are water puddles: easy because they are basically just shadow color with highlights; challenging when reflections come into play, but either way, fun to paint!

Daily Painting #309 – Red Papaya

Oil painting on hardboard
Approximately 6 x 8 inches — 15 x 20 cm

This was the first red papaya I’ve tried, and it was the best I have ever tasted — sweet and very refreshing. Given a chance, I may have been tempted to eat this particular papaya all by myself (it was about a foot long)!

I can’t believe it’s the 300th painting already, and there are only 65 more before I complete one year of daily paintings!

My goal is to finish one year and after which, if God is willing, I’d like to start on a new project — something which I have been planning on since late last year. Hope you will stay tuned for that.

I absolutely love this one! There’s something about this color scheme that I find very pleasing. I liked it so much that I decided to make the next painting a companion to this.

By the way, I will be making most of the future daily paintings in the standard sizes of 6″x6″, 5″x7″, etc.

This painting went through a few different phases while I was working on it as I didn’t plan thoroughly beforehand. The first setup included peppercorns as well as some laurel leaves showing around the edges. After I laid in the background, I decided not to include the laurel leaves. Then just before finishing the painting, I realized that the peppercorns were out of place among the star anise so I turned them into anise seeds instead.

I also initially planned on the background being white, but I felt adventurous so I played around with phthalo blue. I’m glad I didn’t completely blend out the brushstrokes and the phthalo blue as I think they add interest to the background. Hmmm, showy brushstrokes and phthalo blue always seem to remind me of paintings by Michael Naples or Carol Marine. If you haven’t already, check them out and feast your eyes on some gorgeous contemporary paintings with vibrant colors and expressive brushwork. They are a constant source of inspiration for me.

I spent a good while moving the lychees around, trying to find a composition that I wanted to paint. I finally decided to eat one and paint the shiny, brown seed.
