Here’s something different from the usual detailed and realistic paintings — one in an “impressionistic” style. While I’d call this going outside the comfort zone, I actually did little planning and tried to be very relaxed and free. In reality, the roses and leaves have some texture because of the thicker paint that I used but the scan doesn’t show it very well.
I’m not sure I’ll be doing more of this kind of painting anytime soon, but it is good to try something different once in a while.

Below are the three previous rose paintings. I think this last one is my favorite of all though.

I missed posting a daily painting for the second time yesterday as I wasn’t able to use our computer. Anyway, the two paintings that I will post today are part of the series of roses with black backgrounds. This first one was based on a photo by Gypsytoo from the WetCanvas Image Library. I am doing these rose paintings in preparation for a much bigger oil painting of a flower arrangement that I will be doing soon.
I will post the other rose painting in a little while. Stay tuned!

Personally, I think flowers and figures are the most difficult subjects to paint well. The challenging part of this painting was to get the rose to look realistic and not look like plastic. There’s a bit more texture to the petals than what the scan shows and, I think, it’s that texture that makes the rose look more real. This painting was based on a photograph by WetCanvas Image Library contributor maltman.
By the way, I am not fully back to the bigger paintings yet. I still have one more ACEO painting to post tomorrow and then I’m back to the regular sizes like this one.
