This orchid bud was done using leftover oil paint that I had from the previous day’s session. My reference was a pencil sketch that I did from life a few years ago. Somehow the monochrome effect didn’t look right as I was painting it, but in the end, I liked it and thought it had a “classic” feel to it.

This is the first time this orchid has bloomed for us. I don’t know its name, but it has long graceful spikes full of tiny, tiny flowers with orange centers. To orchid lovers out there, if you know the name of this orchid or what species it belongs to, please let me know.

This is the second daily painting today since I missed posting yesterday.
I wanted to try something “creative”. I taped a branch of grape vine to a piece of paper and drew in the grapes with red marker pens. I was thinking along the lines of trompe l’oeil.
The challenge was to make the leaves and the branch look very realistic in order to make the outline of the grapes look like they were just drawn and not part of the “real” branch.

Here is the pigeon orchid (dendrobium crumenatum) in bloom. I like these delicate white flowers. They began to wilt even as I was painting them though.

This is the first time I’m painting the Pigeon Orchid (dendrobium crumenatum). Our little plant has actually bloomed before, but I wasn’t quick enough to paint the flowers then. My Mom and I were new to the Pigeon Orchid and we were more accustomed to longer blooming orchids. I was very surprised when these wilted after only a few hours! I made sure to catch the blooms (and bud) this time though.

I had some time to do a larger painting in between the ACEOs. I liked working on this bird of paradise — it seemed to paint itself! I also like how the black background makes the orange more striking.

I’m nearing my 100th post on this blog. I’m quite pleased to say that there hasn’t been a day since I joined in the painting-a-day challenge when I haven’t finished at least one oil painting…yet.
Why am I saying this? Well, I have recently been working on some commissions and I wanted to devote as much time as possible to them. Rather than temporarily stopping the daily paintings (and breaking my streak!), I decided to create tiny, ACEO oil paintings. So for the next few weeks, you will be seeing more of these little paintings. I hope you like them!
What is “ACEO”?
ACEO stands for “Art Cards, Editions and Originals”. These are small artworks measuring 2.5 x 3.5 inches. Because of their small size, artists are able to offer a more affordable way for people to collect their artworks.
Subjects can be anything from pets to flowers, and styles range from the highly detailed to the abstract. Artists also use a variety of mediums to create these little masterpieces. Examples are oils, pastels, colored pencils and even “black and white” mediums like charcoal and graphite pencils. Whatever the medium or style, ACEOs are a great way to start your own original art collection!
By the way, if you wish to commission me for a realistic portrait in pencil or in charcoal, please visit my pencil drawings gallery. Or feel free to e-mail me at: faith@artisticrealism.com

Here’s the other half of the orchid diptych I posted yesterday. I actually painted the right side first because I didn’t really plan this to be a diptych. Below is an image showing the two side by side.

Taking an inspiration from yesterday’s cabbage painting, this one also has a similar background design. This painting is meant to be part of a diptych. I will post the other half tomorrow, so stay tuned!

Daily Painting #33 – Paradise in Blue Bottle
Oil on gessoed matboard
5 x 5 inches — 12.7 x 12.7 cm
Plus about 3/4″ (1.9 cm) margin for framing
US$100 plus shipping and handling
For purchasing information, please e-mail me: faith@artisticrealism.com
The bird of paradise was difficult to paint, but, surprisingly, the blue bottle was quite easy. I have been putting off painting bottles and jars because I thought they would be too difficult to paint with all the reflections and highlights, but this blue bottle seemed to paint itself.
I’m thinking of a new composition for the bottle. I will paint it again, one of these days, as the featured subject.
