Since today is Independence Day in America, I wish to greet all Americans a Happy Fourth of July!
Today is also a very special day for me because, like the title says, this is also my blog’s first anniversary! I should have posted the 365th daily painting around this time, but since I wasn’t able to keep my schedule, it will come a little (or a lot!) later than I expected. We’ll see though. I may have some more to say come the day I post that 365th painting, but for now, I just want to say THANK YOU! once again to all of you who visit my blog, those who enjoy my paintings, those who take time to send me their comments — you are all very special to me! Thank you!

Sunshine Award
I just received the Sunshine award from wonderful artist Becky Joy. Thanks, Ms. Becky!
The rules for accepting the award are:
- Put the logo on your blog or within your post.
- Pass the award onto 12 bloggers.
- Link the nominees within your post.
- Let the nominees know they received this award.
- Link to the person from whom you received this award.
Here are my twelve nominees in no particular order:
Marilyn King – Very nice oil paintings.
Michael Naples – I absolutely love his work. He, along with Duane Keiser, inspired me to begin my own daily painting project.
Karen Hargett – My friend who does very lovely pastels.
Peter Yesis – I like how he includes humor and pictures of paintings in progress in his posts.
Dean Haven – A new friend I met thanks to the Different Strokes from Different Folks blog.
Mick McGinty – Every time I see his work, I say, “When I grow up, I want to paint just like him.”
Kari Tirrell – Soft, beautiful pastels and portraits.
Diane Hoeptner – Lovely flowers. Bright colors. Juicy paint.
Carol Nelson – I just “discovered” her blog recently, but I enjoy following her 100 portraits in 100 days project.
Liz Holm – Fabulous portraits!
Paul Brown – Extremely realistic still life paintings.
Vivienne St. Clair – Wonderful postcard paintings.
As always, no pressure to join in if you do not feel like it. Happy painting/drawing, my artist friends!

I really enjoyed painting “Happy New Year” so I decided to do another one with a similar concept. Thinking of subjects for these trompe l’oeils is just as much fun as painting them and trying to make them look realistic.

Here’s a new trompe l’oeil painting. For those who find this post a bit late with almost 2 weeks past now since New Year’s Day, I’ll explain. I started creating a painting a day on June 20, 2009, but I only managed to get this blog going on July 4, 2009. Although it means that I am always ahead by about 15 paintings, each one is posted to this blog in the order that I painted them. I didn’t plan the date before painting this trompe l’oeil and its turn only came up today.
Looking back, I am thankful that I have been able to finish one painting a day, except for one day when I painted two (red pepper and green pepper) and another day when I worked on a portrait instead of a daily painting.

I really hated this while I was working on it. I had no idea how I would approach the layers of wrinkled paper, and getting the color of the pear right was a struggle as well because it almost always turned out too gray. Funny how after staring at the finished painting for a few hours it has become one of my most favorite. I like the contrast of the texture and thick paint of the paper against the smoothness of the pear.
