I’ve been wanting to do this composition for quite some time now, but I kept putting it off because I was intimidated by the glass dish. Well, these baby tangerines wouldn’t keep any longer so I had no choice but to do it. Surprisingly, this painting was fun and I didn’t come across any difficulties at all.

I have painted this teacup a few times before, and each time, the design on the cup changes. I haven’t really painted the original design as it appears on the cup, but the one in A Lemon and a Teacup is the closest.
Here are the other paintings featuring this teacup:

I REALLY like this painting of a tangerine. Orange and brown is one of the color combinations that I like best. I think they go very, very well together. I also like the contrast between the tangerine’s yellowish white pith and the dark background.
Again, this uses a limited palette of cadmium yellow lemon, burnt sienna, ultramarine blue and titanium white, but with the addition of cadmium red to make the orange color.

We bought a small bouquet of these little rosebuds a while back. I kept painting them until they wilted and lost their shape, so I will be posting rose paintings for a few days.

Well, here’s my 100th daily painting! I wanted to paint something special so this is bigger than the ACEOs I have been posting lately. I also searched quite a bit for that special subject and/or composition. At first, I thought I’d do another avocado like the first daily painting, but since I couldn’t get any avocados, I settled on oranges. I chose this composition because I think it represents “100″ perfectly without being too obvious.
I’m dedicating this painting to my Mom, who encouraged me to do the daily paintings in the first place, and who’s been very supportive.
It’s been a good 100 days and I’ve learned so much about oil painting. I’ve been able to paint ordinary things which I never thought would have potential in a painting before. It’s truly a wonderful experience to slow down and examine details and all the beautiful things that God has created for us. Everything is beautiful!
There is still so much to learn, and my plan is to keep this up for at least a year. But we’ll see where it goes. One thing’s for sure though — I’m looking forward to the next 100! I hope you are too!
Thank you to friends and subscribers who left comments and gave their support! Also, many thanks to other daily painters, especially to Michael Naples and Painting-a-Day pioneer Duane Keiser, for the inspiration.

I didn’t get a chance to post this earlier today. For this painting, I wanted to do a study of an orange flesh. I have done a few oranges before, but making the flesh look realistic and juicy was the most difficult to pull off. The background was inspired by yesterday’s eggplant painting.

Oranges and other citrus fruits are some of my most favorite subjects to paint. I guess one of the reasons is because I get to use my cadmium yellow paint more. I love that color!
Another color that I also like to use is phthalo blue. I like how it makes a painting more energetic and spontaneous. My brother, David, tells me that I used way too much phthalo blue for the shadow in this painting. I agree with him, but I think I like it that way…

Another one inspired by daily painting #41. So far this is the most painterly that I have done. I kept blending to a minimum, especially in the foreground. I feel that it could have been done better, but I am quite pleased with the result. It was a fun painting and I learned that burnt sienna and yellow ochre is a good combination!

Inspired by daily paintings #41 – Country Breakfast and #27 – Calamansi (the sprig I used here is actually one which I cut from my Mom’s calamansi plant).
When I do my pencil drawings, I add an extra 3/4″ (1.9 cm) margin around the paper to give clients some allowance for framing. When I started doing a painting a day, I borrowed that practice so all of my previous daily paintings also had margins of about 3/4″ (1.9 cm) — a third of which was painted on while the rest was left unpainted.
I noticed, however, that oil paintings by other artists do not have white borders so just to conform to standards, starting with this painting, I won’t be including the usual 3/4″ (1.9 cm) margin. I will still leave about 1/4″ (6 mm) though, but that will be painted on as well.
