A while back, I painted these Dendrobium orchid buds. Here’s a painting of one of those buds fully opened.

Phthalo blue is a very powerful color and I have to constantly remind myself to use only a small amount. Too much usually results in a pile of mud-looking mixture.

I often forget, however. I don’t think I’ve ever used it on a background and didn’t end up scraping it off and trying again. This usually means that after the painting is done, I’ll end up with a pile of “mud mix” from the background attempts which didn’t turn out right. Check out the next painting to see how I used that “mud mix”.

I waited for this orchid to flower for a long time. I think it was over a year ago when it last bloomed. I was really excited when I saw the buds growing. Today, all three buds have fully opened — it’s really wonderful to see its deep purple flowers again!

Orchid Bud - ACEO Oil Paintings

Daily Painting #215 – Orchid Bud

ACEO oil painting on gessoed matboard
Approximately 2.5 x 3.5 inches — 6.5 x 9 cm

This orchid bud was done using leftover oil paint that I had from the previous day’s session. My reference was a pencil sketch that I did from life a few years ago. Somehow the monochrome effect didn’t look right as I was painting it, but in the end, I liked it and thought it had a “classic” feel to it.

This is the first time I’m painting the Pigeon Orchid (dendrobium crumenatum). Our little plant has actually bloomed before, but I wasn’t quick enough to paint the flowers then. My Mom and I were new to the Pigeon Orchid and we were more accustomed to longer blooming orchids. I was very surprised when these wilted after only a few hours! I made sure to catch the blooms (and bud) this time though.
