Personally, I think flowers and figures are the most difficult subjects to paint well. The challenging part of this painting was to get the rose to look realistic and not look like plastic. There’s a bit more texture to the petals than what the scan shows and, I think, it’s that texture that makes the rose look more real. This painting was based on a photograph by WetCanvas Image Library contributor maltman.
By the way, I am not fully back to the bigger paintings yet. I still have one more ACEO painting to post tomorrow and then I’m back to the regular sizes like this one.

Hello Faith, you have a fan all the way in Guatemala, central america! I love your rose! roses are way difficult, I am a beginner painter myself and so I know, I admire your work and I hope one day I will be able to paint as you, I love realistic paint but it’s really hard, and I have never painted a portrait, but some day I will.
