This month, James Parker posted pictures of four different birds on his Windows to the Words challenge blog. I just recently came across his blog and thought I’d join in as well. My first entry is this little bluebird — I really like his bright blue wings.
The other night I completed another bird painting for the challenge. It is not a daily painting as it is slightly bigger. It’s a different style from all the others that I have done before, and I am really excited to share it with you to see if you will like it as well. I will post it here as soon as it is dry enough to scan.
Be sure to check out the Windows to the Words blog to see the different interpretations from all the artists who participated.

I’m very pleased with this painting. I was able to finish it easily — every brush stroke seemed to fall in its proper place the first time around. I love that. I think the time I spent to analyze the subject and the colors helped greatly.

Potatoes are so much fun to paint! I am very pleased with how this turned out, but there is a lot of glare showing in the scan, especially in the peeler’s handle area. In reality, it is quite smooth and even. I’ll try to get a better scan of this later if I can and change the image.
Edit: Image replaced with improved version.

This is the second daily painting today since I missed posting yesterday.
I wanted to try something “creative”. I taped a branch of grape vine to a piece of paper and drew in the grapes with red marker pens. I was thinking along the lines of trompe l’oeil.
The challenge was to make the leaves and the branch look very realistic in order to make the outline of the grapes look like they were just drawn and not part of the “real” branch.

I zoomed in really close to the asparagus. I thought I’d experiment a bit with focus so I made some of the edges blurry.

I painted this for the Different Strokes from Different Folks Cupcake Challenge. I am pleased with the result. My favorite part is the little bit of cake showing under the frosting.
This is my first submission to the Different Strokes blog, by the way. It’s fun to look at others’ paintings, and it’s great to see the many different ways artists can approach a subject.

My Mom thought these two bell peppers would make good painting subjects, especially how one was turning yellow/orange at the top. My favorite is the green one that’s resting on its side though. It’s amazing how even a faint reflected light can make a painted subject look more realistic.

I was searching for something to paint when my Mom picked out this little straw hat from my props storage under the easel. She said, “Paint this.” Hanging the hat was the first arrangement that came into my mind. Initially, I thought I’d also include a shelf below the hat and then display something there. But what?? I couldn’t decide so I painted the hat alone. I like how it turned out and how it is high up in the painting.
My head is already filled with ideas inspired by this hat and arrangement. Perhaps I will do another one like this and include the shelf below. We’ll see…
By now it is becoming a habit for me to scrape off parts of a painting when it is not going well. It used to be that I’d keep adding more and more paint to correct an obviously wrong color base, or move the paint around to save it and hope that it’ll look better. It worked sometimes, but most times the painting ended up looking dull and overworked. Now I just scrape off that layer of paint. Less frustrating this way. I also like how a ghost of the previous attempt remains so I don’t really start from nothing all over again. I think it makes the next attempts so much easier and fresher.
