A while back, I painted these Dendrobium orchid buds. Here’s a painting of one of those buds fully opened.

Phthalo blue is a very powerful color and I have to constantly remind myself to use only a small amount. Too much usually results in a pile of mud-looking mixture.

I often forget, however. I don’t think I’ve ever used it on a background and didn’t end up scraping it off and trying again. This usually means that after the painting is done, I’ll end up with a pile of “mud mix” from the background attempts which didn’t turn out right. Check out the next painting to see how I used that “mud mix”.

Making the background smooth was a challenge, but I really love how this turned out. I like how the plum is so low in the painting.

I really like how these yellow onions came out — I like their thin, delicate skin. I am not pleased with how a lot of my paintings are turning out lately which makes me appreciate this one even more.

This is a painting of the tropical fruit star apple or caimito/cainito. I have not eaten one of these in a long while that I have actually forgotten what they taste like. They are delicious!

I’ve been wanting to do this composition for quite some time now, but I kept putting it off because I was intimidated by the glass dish. Well, these baby tangerines wouldn’t keep any longer so I had no choice but to do it. Surprisingly, this painting was fun and I didn’t come across any difficulties at all.

I tried out a smoother painting board for “Three Tomatoes” which I made by sanding the last layer of gesso. I’m not sure if I like painting on this any better than on the unsanded board. I will have to try it out some more before I conclude anything, but the paint did feel so much more fluid on it.

I love painting crumbs. I do these by painting dots of shadow color and dragging them with a soft brush, and then going back and adding a lighter color for the crumbs.

Cake may be my second most favorite treat…next to ice cream. We usually make our own simple version from cake mix which come in boxes, but I think this was the first time I’ve eaten one which had all the extras — cherry, icing and all.
