This one was painted from a picture I took a while back. It’s my first time to paint these round eggplants but I am very pleased with how it turned out. Although I much prefer the taste of the longer, violet eggplants, I must say that these round ones are just as much fun to paint.

This is the first time this orchid has bloomed for us. I don’t know its name, but it has long graceful spikes full of tiny, tiny flowers with orange centers. To orchid lovers out there, if you know the name of this orchid or what species it belongs to, please let me know.

Here’s something different from the usual detailed and realistic paintings — one in an “impressionistic” style. While I’d call this going outside the comfort zone, I actually did little planning and tried to be very relaxed and free. In reality, the roses and leaves have some texture because of the thicker paint that I used but the scan doesn’t show it very well.

I’m not sure I’ll be doing more of this kind of painting anytime soon, but it is good to try something different once in a while.

I REALLY like this painting of a tangerine. Orange and brown is one of the color combinations that I like best. I think they go very, very well together. I also like the contrast between the tangerine’s yellowish white pith and the dark background.

Again, this uses a limited palette of cadmium yellow lemon, burnt sienna, ultramarine blue and titanium white, but with the addition of cadmium red to make the orange color.

In the Cup of Chocolate painting I posted yesterday, I used just three colors plus white: burnt sienna, ultramarine blue, yellow ochre and titanium white. For this painting, I substituted cadmium yellow lemon for the yellow ochre. I like how both turned out. I feel that using a very limited palette gives a painting an overall harmony.

Also, yesterday was the first day that I didn’t finish a painting. I did use my oil paints and worked on a new portrait though. If you’ve been following the Different Strokes from Different Folks blog, the latest challenge is the Year-End Portrait Swap. Ms. Jurick gave all participants photographs of other artists to paint from.

I started mine yesterday and am nearly finished with the underpainting. So far, so good. Below is a peek of what it looks so far.

Potatoes are so much fun to paint! I am very pleased with how this turned out, but there is a lot of glare showing in the scan, especially in the peeler’s handle area. In reality, it is quite smooth and even. I’ll try to get a better scan of this later if I can and change the image.

Life’s been busy the past few weeks so I am very sorry for the somewhat irregular postings. There are days when I am able to spend some time on the computer and post, but there are days when there just isn’t enough time. I am still painting and completing one everyday though, and I haven’t missed one day yet (thankfully!). Anyway, here is one more landscape painting. This one is a bit bigger than the others. I like how small the figure is because I think it gives the painting a “panoramic” feel.

Here’s the first of two landscape paintings that I will be posting today.

One of the things that I like best in a landscape painting is when it invites one to jump right into it. And one of the things that makes a landscape painting “inviting” for me is when the foreground has some elements that look close enough to touch, or maybe a rocky path that seems close enough to walk on. I attempted to capture that effect here so I painted quite a lot of the individual blades of grass.
